About Fisher Island

Fisher Island is the most prestigious and unique oceanfront condominium developments in all Florida. Fisher Island is located just south of Miami Beach's South Beach across Government Cut. The Fisher Island Ferry is the only access this highly private island community. Security is of the utmost concern with ground and marine patrols. One bedroom condo's start at just above $250,000 and a 7 bedroom mansion can cost as much at $25,000,000. Today, Fisher Island has a hotel, many condo buildings, an observatory, and a private marina. The local Fisher Island celebs are Oprah Winfrey, Boris Becker and Mel Brooks. Living among the rich will be an every day event as Fisher Island has the highest per capita income of any place in the United States. The island was created in 1905 by a dredging operation which was commonplace until the 1960's in Florida. Fisher Island was founded by Carl G. Fisher, a local land developer along with Dana A. Dorsey who was Miami's first African American millionaire. Another partner joined the development team in 1925 by the name of William Kissam Vanderbilt II. He traded his mega yacht in exchange for ownership in the island venture. Vanderbilt died in 1944 at which time his ownership in Fisher Island was bought by U.S. Steel heir Edward Moore. Soon after the death of Moore, another millionaire, Gar Wood, famous for the invention of hydraulics bought the island as his personal family retreat. It wasn't until 1963 that Wood could be persuaded to sell to another local millionaire Bebe Rebozo of Key Biscayne. Rebozo would later be known for his close ties to Richard Nixon. Rebozo was joined by Senator Smathers as a partner. After years of legal haggling over ownership and the best path for further development, the highly sought after island was finally re-started in the 1980s with a master plan for architecture matching the original 1920s Spanish style mansions seen throughout Miami.
