About Lafayette County
Lafayette (pronounced la-fet) is located in central Florida’s agricultural region. The county was named for a French officer who worked for General George Washington during the American Revolutionary War. The 543 square miles of Lafayette are populated by about 9,000 people who live in the small towns and villages. Lafayette is a dry county, meaning there is no sale of alcohol within the county limits. Mayo is the county seat and the only incorporated town. Mayo is home to the Pioneer Days Festival that is celebrated annually in October. There are canning events, arts and crafts, vendors, and pioneer re-enactments during the Pioneer Days. For the past 33 years, Lafayette County has used this festival to preserve the history and culture of the people of this area. The majority of Lafayette is covered in farms, ranches, and orchards. The Suwannee River snakes along the border of the eastern edge of Lafayette County. Troy Springs State Park and the Steinhatchee Conservation Park are both located in Lafayette County and have access to the Suwannee River.
