There are many stories about how the County of Volusia received its name. Some believe it was for a man named Voluz who owned a plantation close to the Saint John’s River, other believe it was an old Native American word, but today, Volusia is a word that describes the beautiful, eastern coast of Florida. Volusia County is home to Daytona Beach and New Smyrna Beach; both known for their water sports and relaxing lifestyles. Volusia County is also where the Daytona International Speedway is located. The estimated 1,400 square miles of land that is contained within Volusia is bordered on the west and south by the Saint John’s River and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. Traveling throughout Volusia is a breeze. Interstate 95, Interstate 4, US Highway 1, US Highway 92 (connecting Polk County to the Daytona International Speedway) and State Road A1A (scenic coastal route) are all located in Volusia County. This region is close to all the attractions Florida has to offer; the Kennedy Space Center and The Walt Disney World Resorts/theme parks are about an hour south of Volusia. There are several schools of higher learning in Volusia County, such as the Daytona Beach Campus of the University of Central Florida, Stetson University, and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
