Longwood is located in the heart of central Florida. This town of approximately 13,000 people has been a safe place for people to retreat to since the Seminole Indians inhabited the area to escape the invading Spanish. The area was dominated by the Senator, the oldest pond cypress tree in the world, which at its tallest was 165 feet tall. This tree was destroyed by fire on January 16, 2012. The Senator is now 20 feet tall. The neighboring tree, known as Lady Liberty, is currently 89 feet tall and is estimated to be over 2000 years old. The softly rolling hills of this area have helped this residential town grow in the last 40 years. With the booming aeronautical and entertainment regions of Florida, Longwood became a haven for its residents to live in, while they commute to work in Orange County and Cape Canaveral. Major roads around Longwood are I-4 and US 17. There are many schools of higher education near Longboat: Seminole State College, Rollins University, and the University of Central Florida.
