Valrico is located in Hillsborough County just to the east of Brandon on Rt 60 coming out of Tampa. A Tufts College professor named William G. Tousey, coined the name Valrico after a Spanish term for “rich Valley.” It started as an area of cotton plantations. While bigger than many bedroom communities to Tampa, Valrico experineced rapid growth during the building boom of 2000-2004. Valrico has no college but the University of South Florida is located 15 miles away. Relatively small in population, Valrico has one high school, called Bloomingdale High.
