About Louisiana

Louisiana is the only state in the union to use the word “parish” instead of “county.” Within Louisiana’s 64 parishes are its major metropolitan areas: New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, Shreveport, Bossier City, Monroe and Lafayette. Louisiana’s legal system of civil law based on French, German, and Spanish civil codes called Roman Law which differs from the civil law of all the other states which is based on English Common Law.

Louisiana is also home to many distinct cultures of the which the Creoles and Cajuns are two. Creoles, an amalgamation of French, Italian, German, Irish, African And Native American cultures, came to be associated with the New Orleans area which includes Metairie, Chalmette, and Kenner. Ancestors of the Cajuns came from west central France to provinces in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Canada, known as Acadia. Many were captured by the British after the French and Indian war and eventually found refuge in south Louisiana in the region around Lafayette, Abbeville and New Iberia and Morgan City, and Crowley. Many also settled in the La Fourche Bayou country which includes cities such as Houma, Larose and Grand Isle. A third distinct culture is that of the Islenos who are descendants of Spanish Canary Islanders who migrated from the Canary Islands. They settled in four main settlements but many relocated to St. Barnard Parish which includes New Orleans, Kenner, Metairie and Chalmette.
