Tarpon Springs got it’s name in the late 1800 from visitors who noticed the spotted tarpon fish leaping out of the Gulf of Mexico. The first Greek immigrants arrived in Tarpon Springs around 1880 hoping to thrive as sponge divers. By the 1900’s sponge harvesting became a multi-million dollar business in Tarpon Springs until the sponges died off in the mid 1900’s due to a red tide.

Tarpon Springs is known for it’s waterfront properties overlooking the Gulf of Mexico and it’s many bayous. This combined with nearby beaches in Tarpon Springs gives many opportunities for swimming, boating and many other water sports.

The Sponge Dock District of Tarpon Springs is the biggest tourist attraction in the area as well as being a historic destination.
