Gulf Estates is in the city of Tarpon Springs and is located about 3 miles north of downtown Tarpon Springs. Tarpon Springs is a city in Pinellas County, Florida. It has a population of about 22,554 people and is known for having the highest percentage of Greek-Americans of any city in the U.S.
Tarpon Springs got it’s name in the late 1800 from visitors who noticed the spotted tarpon fish leaping out of the Gulf of Mexico. The first Greek immigrants arrived in Tarpon Springs around 1880 hoping to thrive as sponge divers. By the 1900’s sponge harvesting became a multi million dollar business in Tarpon Springs until the sponges died off in the mid 1900’s due to a red tide.
Tarpon Springs is known for it’s waterfront properties overlooking the Gulf of Mexico and it’s many bayous. This combined with nearby beaches in Tarpon Springs gives many opportunities for swimming, boating and many other water sports.
The Sponge Dock District of Tarpon Springs is the biggest tourist attraction in the area as well as being a historic destination. There are an abundance of shops and boutiques that sell real sponges along with other imported goods. There are numerous restaurants that offer you traditional Greek cuisine to enjoy while sitting by the marina and watching the boats pass.
