The City of St. Pete Beach is a barrier island in Pinellas County, Florida. The island of Treasure Island is to to north and Tierra Verde is to the south. The city was incorporated in 1957 with the consolidation of the surrounding smaller towns of Pass-a-Grille, Don Ce Sar, Belle Vista, St. Petersburg Beach and some other parts unincorporated Pinellas County to become the City of St. Petersburg Beach. In 1994, the citizens decided to shorten the name to St. Pete Beach. The shorter name is what people often called it anyway and the move helped lessen the confusion with the City of St. Petersburg, located on the mainland to the east.
