About Galleys Cove
Madeira Beach is a barrier Island in Pinellas County, Florida. Sandwiched between the Gulf of Mexico and Boca Ciega Bay, this quiet island community of about 5000 residents has beautiful beaches, great dining and John's Pass board walk. Madeira Beach neighbors are Redington Beach to the north and Treasure Island to the south.
Back in the 1950's many of the finger islands of Madeira Beach were dredged from Boca Ciega Bay creating the islands of Crystal Island, Isle of Palms, Capri Island and many other small islands.
John's Pass is the cut that connects the Gulf of Mexico to Boca Ciega Bay. The story of John's Pass is as colorful one. Pirate John LeVeque, a Frenchman and deck hand for a Spanish Galleon, was captured by pirates in 1836. Afraid for his life, he traded his life as a sailor for that of a pirate. John wasn't the best pirate in the Gulf of Mexico either and history points to the fact that he never killed or took a single hostage and when he retired on Madeira Beach, his small bounty was just one chest of treasure. Even that was lost in the Great Hurricane of September 27, 1848 when his treasure map was destroyed.
John LeVeque found the beauty of John's Pass and Madeira Beach overwhelming and he spent the rest of his years fishing, swimming by day and searching for his lost treasure by night.
