About Saint Lucie County
Saint Lucie County, one of 67 counties in Florida, was probably named after fort Santa Lucia built by the Spanish at Jupiter Inlet. Saint Lucie is a major producer of grapefruit and oranges. Pineapples were the area's largest agricultural industry through the 1800's. With Henry Flagler's railroad expansion through the St. Lucie County area all the way to Key West came the importation of pineapples from Cuba. These imports plus frequent freezes caused the collapse of the pineapple trade. Citrus and cattle soon drove Saint Lucie's agricultural industry. Many border and name changes have occurred since Saint Lucie County was established. St. Lucie County is approximately 600 square miles with a diverse population that is one of the fastest growing counties in the U.S. That's not surprising with its 21 miles of unspoiled beaches yet progressive businesses. Today St. Lucie County is known as the crown jewel of the Treasure Coast.
