About Palm Bay
Palm Bay is located in Brevard County, Florida, just 10 miles Southwest of Melbourne. The first residents of Palm Bay were said to be the Timucuan Indians who were attracted to Turkey Creek-a tributary of the Indian River-for its wildlife, fish and oysters. Today, the Wildlife Turkey Creek Sanctuary provides a protected home for many endangered and rare animals and plants.
Palm Bay was named for the palm trees that grew along the border of the mouth of Turkey Creek.
In the recent past (May, 2008), Palm Bay was hit by fires that swept through 4,300 acres of woods and saw palmetto, affecting 120 homes and destroying at least 30. Though the fires were blamed on arson, the arid climate and winds were a major factor in the rapid spreading.
