About Key West
Key West is not only a city, but also an island of the same name located at the southernmost tip of the Florida Keys in Monroe County. Key West is a seaport destination for many cruise ships and has always been an important military post since it sits at the northern most edge of the deep water channel connecting the Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico. Key West claims to be the only city in the lower 48 states never to have had a frost. The original Key West neighborhood is called "Old Town" and comprises Key West's Historic District where you find the classic bungalows and guest mansions dating from 1886. Walking Duval Street and experiencing the Sunset Celebration at Mallary Square are well loved past times for visitors and residents alike. Well known visitors and residents to Key West include Tennessee Williams and Ernest Hemingway who wrote some of their most famous works while here. Snowball's(Hemingway's original pet cat) descendants still reside on the grounds at the Hemingway House. The new section of Key West, "New Town," created from landfill, contains shopping centers, schools, residential areas and the Key West International Airport.
