About Flagler County

Flagler County is Florida’s 53rd county, established in 1917 from portions of St. Johns County and Volusia County. It’s named after Henry Morrison Flagler who developed a large portion of Florida’s east coast. He also built the Florida East Coast Railway which increased access to timber, turpentine and crops from the interior of the county.
Flagler County’s development accelerated as better transportation and infrastructure were put in place. Ornamental fern replaced citrus after the severe freeze at the turn of the century and changing market conditions caused a gradual shift from potato to cabbage farming. The post war “boom” was a little late arriving in Flagler County but arrived with Interstate 95 and a corporation known as ITT which envisioned a community named Palm Coast.
