About Weld County
Weld County covers a landmass of about 4,000 square miles bordering Wyoming and Nebraska in the beautiful State of Colorado. This county is larger in landmass than Delaware, Washington D.C., and Rhode Island. The population is only 180,000, with the majority of the people living within in a 20 mile radius of the county seat, Greeley.
Weld County is known for the mineral rich soils that cover the countryside. This region is the richest agricultural area east of the Rocky Mountains and holds half of the cattle that reside in Colorado. Besides raising cattle, Weld County lands support thriving grain and sugar beet crops. Weld County is the second largest producer of oil and gas in Colorado.
The eastern portion of the county is flat, since it is part of the high plains. The western portion of Weld County is covered by gently rolling prairies. The northeastern portion of the county is dominated by Pawnee National Grasslands. This area is mostly flat unpopulated, with people visiting to see the Chalk Buttes (once a raptor nesting site) and the rivers that flow through the grasslands: Crow Creek, Pawnee River, and the South Platte River.
Greeley, the county seat, is home to the University of North Colorado, as does Aims Community College. Weld County is known for Centennial Village. This tourist attraction is an authentic 35 building pioneer village that demonstrates how people lived during the 1860’s to the 1920’s. Being both educational and interesting, Centennial Village is a must see!
