About Park County
Park County nestled in the Front Range of the Rocky Mountains, southwest of Denver. The Pike National Forest covers the eastern edge of the county, while the San Isabel National Forest lines the southwestern portion. The clear, mountain runoff that flows through the many rivers and creeks that wind their way through Park County were once thought to be full of gold. In the 1880’s, Park County became filled with gold miners.
The county seat of Park County is Fairplay. This town is known for Burro Days. This 29-mile burro race over rough terrain leading up to the summit of Mosquito Pass, bring the resident population of 610 to almost 10,000.
Animal festivals are not limited to Fairplay. The Town of Guffey has a festival called the Fourth of July Chicken Fly. In this event, chicken are placed atop a 10-foot platform. Prizes are given for the chicken that “flies” the farthest from the platform.
Eleven-Mile State Park is named so, because it is 11 miles south of Lake George. This park contains mountain, canyon, mountain, and lake vistas that are “calendar worthy”. There are 300 campsites and the waters are full of Cutthroat, Rainbow and Brown Trout, and Northern Pike. Eleven-Mile State Park also has 5 miles of trails that are perfect for hiking or biking.
Major roads crisscross Park County. US Highway 285 and US Route 24 are the main connecting roads that lead into and out of Park County. Interstate 70 is just north of Park County. Denver is about an hour from the easternmost edge of Park County, but it is about 2 hours from Fairplay.
